When Lumbers first started to paint, his subjects were almost exclusively wildlife subjects. His paintings were displayed in a travelling show across Canada sponsored by the National Museums of Canada. It was followed by a series of paintings documenting the Native Peoples of the North, and was sponsored by the Royal Ontario Museum.
